Clinton Global Initiative Commitment by WOTR- Climate Proofing for Poverty Reduction , 2009
Nov 01, 2009
|
WOTR commits to expanding its successful experience of participatory
integrated watershed development (currently in India) to (i) include
the new lens of climate change adaptation and (ii) to develop models
and pedagogies that are adaptable and that can be used by various
cultures. WOTR will provide assistance to communities to help them
systematically regenerate the natural resource base of their
micro-watersheds, harvest rain water in the catchments, promote
appropriate and water-saving agriculture practices and livestock
development, and thus improve food security and livelihoods. WOTR also
commits to testing this model in 2 sites in 2 countries of Africa ( two
each), where the local NGOs, CBOs and communities will be trained and
accompanied to implement and manage their project.

Mar 26, 2009
|
At the 5th World Water Forum, the world’s premier entity dedicated to water issues, Watershed Organisation Trust (WOTR), was awarded the coveted Kyoto World Water Grand Prize at a glittering closing ceremony to mark the closure of the Forum on World Water Day (March 22) at Istanbul, Turkey. The award was presented to Dr Marcella D'Souza, Executive Director of WOTR in recognition of the outstanding contribution made towards organising rural communities for watershed development and rain water harvesting in an inclusive, equitable, sustainable and gender sensitive manner.
The World Water Forum attracted the largest ever gathering of well over 33,000 attendees including delegates from 155 countries. The Kyoto World Water Award received 67 entries from all over the world out of which India’s WOTR emerged as the winner. It assumes huge significance as it is the world’s premier water award given to successful grassroots initiatives that are innovative replicable and sustainable.
Organised by the World Water Council, The World Water Forum takes place once every three years. This year saw a large congregation of world leaders, educationists, economists and environmentalists from across the globe engaging in discussions and debating on key issues like raising the importance of water on the political agenda, supporting the deepening of discussions towards the solution of international water issues, bridging the various divides in the 21st century by formulating concrete proposals, bringing their importance to the world's attention and generating political commitment.

WOTR villages win awards
Jan 02, 2009
|
|
It is indeed a matter of pride for WOTR to have been honoured with four Nirmal Gram Puraskars in 2008 by the President of India, Smt Pratibha Devisingh Patil. The four villages that have made it to this list are Darewadi, Shrisgaon Dhupe, Wankute and Mhaswandi, all located in the Ahmednagar district.
What makes the achievement unique is that these villages have become icons in their own right mainly due to the collective efforts of the villagers themselves who believed that 'shramdaan' or voluntary labour is the right approach for creating transformations. Once bereft of water resources and impoverished, these villages are now ideal pictures of self-reliance and sustenance where farming, thanks to watershed development, is the primary activity. In fact, there has been reverse migration in these villages and women too have become equal partners in entrepreneurship and governance.
